Biodiversity study of an area is of utmost importance as it provides vital information and creates innovative ideas about an entire ecosystem. In any aquatic ecosystem, study of fish diversity is necessary in order to get an insight of the general health and efficiency of any particular ecosystem as well as its status and composition by providing momentum for its sustainable management. Fish is an excellent source of protein contributing to as much as 17% of the world's animal protein, in addition to vitamin A, D and Omega 3 Fatty Acids and thus, serves as an important component of human diet. The first effort in understanding the aquatic ecosystem of an area is to study its fish diversity. Another significance of fish diversity study is that, it can generate ideas to identify new productive species for culture practices as well as for human consumption. Fish, being the only food harvested from natural populations, exist at or near the top of the food chain and can serve as an indicator of a balanced aquatic ecosystem. Fish diversity comprises of species richness, species abundance & phylogenetic diversity.
