Harry Castlemon, an American author, developed the fictional character Frank Pinkerton. Charles Austin Fosdick (1842-1915), a prolific author of young adult adventure literature in the late 19th century, wrote under the pen name Castlemon. Before pursuing a career in writing, Randolph, New York native Castlemon fought in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Fosdick wrote nearly sixty novels under the pseudonym Harry Castlemon, most of which were aimed at young male readers. His love of the outdoors and his personal experiences in the military served as inspiration for his works, which frequently dealt with themes of bravery, adventure, and patriotism. Castlemon's books were well regarded by young readers of the time for their realistic descriptions, exciting action, and moral precepts.
