Originally known as Mansfield Township's High Banks section, the township of Florence incorporated in 1872. The early farming community was laid out in 1850 by the Florence City Company. The foundry is still operating and has been a mainstay of the community for nearly one hundred fifty years.

Judith Wilson King, chairman of the Florence Historical Society Book Committee, explores the township's past in Florence. As president and incorporator of the Florence Historical Society, King has amassed a collection of artifacts and printed and photographic material on the area's history, which she has paired with historical information from research and interviews to create this exceptional history of Florence.
