Mount Karol is a small group of mountains in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. Solan is known for many 'firsts'. India's first brewery Mohan-Meakin Ltd. was set-up here in 1855 AD. Asia's first University of Horticulture and Forestry is also located near Nauni village. Officially the city had been declared 'Mushroom City of India' on September 10, 1997. Besides one of largest off-season vegetable producer district, Solan is also a commercial and industrial district of Himachal Pradesh. The study site is 5 km from the town, located at an altitude of 7000 ft. Karol Mountain is clearly visible from Solan. The study area is dominated by the thick forest of Quercus leucotrichophora, Pinus roxburghii and scanty population of Rhododendron arboreum and Cedrus deodara. Beside this, forest floor is covered by numerous herbs, shrubs and scrubs of great medicinal importance.
