Biological diversity is the term applied to the variety of genes, species and ecosystems found on the earth. It embraces all life forms from plant and animal life to microorganisms and water, land and air in which they live and interact. It provides an abundant and essential supply of indispensable goods and services. The current decline in the world's biodiversity is largely the result of human activities, resulting in habitat destruction, over harvesting, pollution and the inappropriate introduction of foreign plants and animals. The most serious aspect of the loss of biological diversity is the extinction of species communities can be degraded and reduced in area, but as long as all of the original species survive, the communities still have the potential to recover.Extensive field work done by Dr. N.A.PATEL in a largest city of Gujarat state, Ahmedabad, located on Sabarmati river. Study was done to workout plant diversity of the Ahmedabad city keeping Vaidya (1967) work as the starting point to record the shift and the change in the species over the last four decades.1015 plant species belonging to 580 genera spread over 135 families are noticed.
