Giles Foden, geb. 1967 in Warwickshire, England, lebte seit seinem fünften Lebensjahr mit seiner Familie in Afrika. Der Vater arbeitete im Auftrag der Vereinten Nationen an Projekten in mehreren afrikanischen Staaten. Seitdem fühlt er sich eng mit dem afrikanischen Kontinent verbunden und machte ihn zum Handlungsort all seiner Romane. 1993 zog Foden zurück nach England, arbeitete drei Jahre lang für das "Times Literary Supplement" und ist jetzt Redakteur beim "Guardian". Er lebt in London. Er erhielt 1998 den "Whitbread First Novel Award", den renommiertesten Literaturpreis für einen Erstlingsroman.
