Kashmir as a field of folklore literature is, perhaps, not surpassed in fertility by any other country in the world; and yet, while every year witnesses the publication of books on the subject from Bengal, Bombay, Madras, Panjab and other parts, this field has remained almost ungleaned. Rev. Knowles sought to present these tales in a purely literary form as to give them in a fair translation. He hopes that they will prove a real contribution toward the increasing stock of folklore which is doing so much to clear away the clouds that envelop much of the practices, ideas and beliefs which make up the daily life of the natives of this country, controls their feelings and underlies many of their actions.
