20th-Century Masters. One of the major art-historical events in the final years of this century will be the opening of the new museum designed by the world-famous architect Renzo Piano to house the exceptional Beyeler Collection of 20th century masterpieces. The Fondation Beyeler illustrates outstanding works by some of the 20th century's most important artists. The collection has been amassed over a period of more than 50 years by the Swiss gallery owners Ernst and Hildy Beyeler. The collection includes masterpieces by: Bacon, Baselitz, Braque, Cezanne, Ernst, Giacometti, Kandinsky, Kiefer, Klee, Matisse, Miro, Monet, Picasso, Rousseau, Tapies and Toulouse-Lautrec. The volume includes descriptions of each piece in the collection. It explains the history behind the work, highlights the features that make it exceptional, and details pertinent events in its provenance.
