English writer John George Edgar was born in 1834 and died in 1864. A lot of his books were written for boys. Edgar was born in 1834. He was the fourth son of the Rev. John Edgar of Hutton, Berwickshire. He started working as a businessman in Liverpool and went to the West Indies to do business, but he soon gave up business and turned his attention to writing. Edgar's first book was called Boyhood of Great Men and came out in 1853. That same year, he also published a companion book called Footprints of Famous Men. Over the next ten years, he wrote up to fifteen more books for boys to read. Some of them were biographies, and the rest were works of dramatic fiction based on historical facts that showed different times in English history. Edgar knew a lot about border traditions and was especially good at learning about early English and Scottish history. He was the magazine's first editor. Edgar found time between his other work to write strongly conservative political pieces for the London press.
