This essay is a plea for the epistemological tolerance advocated by Paul Feyerabend. Against the image proudly attributed to Feyerabend (detractor of method and rationality), its author argues that the open-mindedness advocated by Feyerabend through his anything goes is not only the most reliable support for scientific progress, but also the foundation of human happiness. For Feyerabend, it's a question of showing that, while science can solve the problems faced by mankind, it is not alone in its ability to do so. It would be to the advantage of science (and scientists), for its own sake and for the good of mankind, to open up to other fields of knowledge that are likely to help humans solve their problems. To be open -minded therefore means to be opportunistic, not opposed to the method; it means knowing how to resort to something else when science is stymied.Using the COVID-19 health crisis as a case in point, the author of this essay shows that tolerance in science is the onlytrue attitude consistent with the advancement of scientific knowledge and human happiness.
