On the basis of archival materials describing the production, economic and organizational activities of the ITL, the problems of the emergence of forced labour in the Gulag, the principles of its organization, the characteristics of forced labour and its impact on the USSR economy and citizens' attitudes to labour in principle are examined. The first chapter examines the genesis of forced labour in the Gulag, from its origins in the Solovetsky Special Purpose Camp and its travels, to the crisis of this system in the mid-1950s. The second chapter examines the problems of the organisation of forced labour and its legal and regulatory framework. The third chapter examines the effectiveness of camp labour, using the three largest sectors in which this labour was used - factory production, construction and forestry.

Shevyrin Sergey Andreevich, doctor en Historia, profesor asociado de la Universidad Pedagógica Estatal de Perm. Su campo de investigación es la historia de la sociedad soviética. Trabajó en el Museo Conmemorativo de la Historia de las Represiones Políticas "Perm 36" y en el Archivo Estatal de Historia Contemporánea de Perm
