The Sinharaja rain forest, which consists of 11,187 hectares comes under the category of "Tropical Rain Forests". It was declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Reserve in 1989. This volume discusses spatial and temporal aspects of forest resource utilization, trends in forest resource utilization, policy interventions in forest management and its impact on forest resource utilization by the communities residing at the periphery of Sinharaja. Although the policy interventions in forest resource utilization in Sri Lanka have theoretically changed into a Community Based Forest Management Approach, in practice, it seems less attended. This book reveals that both community development and effective forest management can be achieved through sustainable utilization of forest resource. In order to do this, Community Based Forest Management Approaches should be practical and well organized.
