Victor Carl Friesen was born and raised on the family farm near Rosthern, Saskatchewan, during the Great Depression. A natural teacher, Friesen taught in a variety of settings over the years-rural one-room school, town school, university, technical institute, and community college-while pursuing his interests in history, natural history, literature, singing, painting, and photography on the side. In 1983, he left teaching to become a full-time freelance writer.
