An ideal dosage form is one, which attains the desired therapeutic concentration of drug in plasma and maintains constant for entire duration of treatment. This is possible through administration of a conventional dosage form in a particular dose and at particular frequency. In most cases, the dosing interval much shorter than the half life of the drug resulting in a number of limitations associated with such a conventional dosage form. It is evident from the recent scientific and patent literature that an increased interest in novel dosage forms that are retained in stomach for a prolonged and predictable period of time exists today in academic and industrial research groups. One of the most feasible approaches for achieving a prolonged and predictable drug delivery profile in the GI tract is to control the gastric residence time, i.e. Gastro retentive Dosage Forms, which will provide us with new and important therapeutic options. These efforts results in Gastro retentive dosageforms that was designed in large part based on different approaches and one of which is Mucoadhesive drug delivery system using bioadhesive polymer to enable it to adhere mucous wall of stomach.
