One of the questions to be eternally debated is when did the Latin American Boom begin. The discussion will likely continue for decades to come, yet there is a certain consensus as to which are three of its arguable commencement years: 1958, 1962 and 1963, to which Founders of the Latin American Boom proposes a fourth in 1964 as climax of the previous ones. Those years involve Carlos Fuentes one way or another, first of all, and, in an order of appearance discussed in these pages, Julio Cortázar, Mario Vargas Llosa and Gabriel García Márquez. Augusto Wong Campos has co-edited two books of letters of the Latin American Boom, Las cartas del Boom (Alfaguara, 2023) and José Donoso and Carlos Fuentes' Correspondencia (Alfaguara, 2024).
