Perlentaucher-Notiz zur Süddeutsche Zeitung-Rezension

Über die Verheerungen und Verlockungen des Orients erfährt Karl-Markus Gauß erschöpfend bei Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer. Freude macht ihm die Neuausgabe von Fallmerayers Reisebeschreibungen von 1845 in dieser Neuausgabe durch Sorfalt der Edition, eine Audio-Lesung Gert Westphals, ein informatives Vor- und Nachwort und vor allem durch die mit historischen Exkursen unterfütterten Reiseeindrücke des Autors selbst. Aus Trapezunt, Konstantinopel oder Thessaloniki berichtet Fallmerayer laut Gauß von Göttern und Mönchen, Menschen und Orten, und zwar so, dass nicht nur der brillante Kunsthistoriker für den Leser erkennbar wird, sondern auch ein Schriftsteller, der seine Erfahrung mit der Fremde in mitreißende Worte zu fassen weiß.
