Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) se casó con el poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley y formó así parte del círculo de poetas románticos que incluía a Lord Byron. Publicó su primera novela, Frankenstein, a los veintiún años, que tuvo un gran éxito. También es autora de las novelas Lodore, Falkner y la futurista The Last Man que escenifica el fin de la civilización en el siglo XXI.
