Mary Shelley (1797-1851) begann schon als Kind Gedichte und Romane zu verfassen. Noch keine 17 Jahre alt, brannte sie mit dem jungen Dichter Percy Shelley durch und bereiste Europa. Im Jahr ihrer Hochzeit 1816 verbrachten beide den Sommer mit Lord Byron am Genfer See, wo sie Ideen für Schauergeschichten sammelten.
