His mother, Mary Sidgwick Benson, was related to the scientist Henry Sidgwick. Edward Frederic Benson, who is best known for his Mapp and Lucia books, and Robert Hugh Benson, who was a priest in the Church of England before becoming a Roman Catholic and wrote many famous books, were also brothers of Benson. Margaret Benson, their sister, was an artist, an author, and a self-taught Egyptologist.
