At Home with Jardines, Hope Loring, abroad with the Jimmies, The Interference of Patricia, A Book of Girls, and The Lilian Bell Birthday Book were among her works. Bell was a travel writer in addition to her novels. Lilian Lida Bell was born in 1867 in Chicago, Illinois, but raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her diploma from Dearborn Seminary in Chicago. Her father, Maj. William W. Bell, served in the American Civil War, as did her grandfather, Gen. Joseph Warren Bell, who, although being a Southerner, sold and liberated his slaves before to the war, moved his family north, and organized the 13th Illinois Cavalry. Captain Thomas Bell, her great-great-grandfather, was a Virginia patriot during the American Revolution. She began writing when she was eight years old and continued until the age of fifteen, when it occurred to her to have anything published. Her first attempts were all successful, and she wrote freely for several years as a result.
