James Longstreet (January 8, 1821 – January 2, 1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War and one of the principal lieutenants of General Robert E. Lee, who referred to him as his 'Old War Horse.' He served under Lee as the commander of the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. Following the war, Longstreet's life took a turn when he endorsed the Republican Party and supported his friend Ulysses S. Grant in his presidential campaign.
