There once existed in Guatemala an honorable lady with blindfolds, who held a balance in her left hand and in her right hand a sword fitted to her body; she wore with decorum a white tunic that covered her ankles and with her sandals crushed the viper of injustice. We, the lawyers, met that beautiful and respected lady, and we called her "JUSTICE" and we learned to love and respect her, both in the university classrooms and in our daily work in our law firms and courts. As it turns out, that lady took off her tunic, the blindfold, she threw the balance and turned Guatemala into a vile prostitute -with the forgiveness of those who exercise that old profession-. She is constantly and repeatedly violated and abused by foreigners and nationals alike. It ended literally swallowing the snake that she stepped on and through it, she spits the poison of injustice at pleasure, protecting and negotiating with the powerful and destroying those of us who dared to dream and put our heads up or those who bother their agenda. She is violated from the highest organ of "justice" to even the most insignificant characters that have the privilege of legislating or imparting justice. My legacy for Guatemala, in addition to all the achievements you have read in this book, including those that positively impacted thousands of lives, through the creation of an equal number of sources of employment; is to have led the transformation of a sick bank and turn it into a protagonist in the banking system, by the way -the discord's apple-. In fact, the parallelism of the Bank's transformation and my own life are impressive, since being very poor, based on struggle, effort and sacrifice, we both became rich, famous and we ended up both captured and co-opted. But undoubtedly the most important, significant and proud legacy is my "seed" represented by four spectacular professionals -my children- who from "factory" are equipped with unbreakable principles and values, which will undoubtedly give the GUATE... mala that unjustly punished their father, any kind of satisfaction, blessing and benefits through the exercise of their respective professions and their example of life. For my part, after living the worst version of the Guatemala that saw me succeed, I can only say: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" 2Timothy: 4-7 NIV Benjamin Franklin already said: "who renounces his freedom for security, does not deserve neither freedom nor security". For that and other reasons, this book is finally in your hands.
