From the Classroom to the Corner explores the in-school and out-of-school experiences of three young women who dropped out of school as adolescents and turned to prostitution. This fascinating book presents them as case studies in the context of dropping out, in-school and non-school curriculum, adolescent prostitution, feminist theory, and race, class, and gender. Most prostitutes state that they are on the streets because they lack the educational credentials and job training required for gainful employment; therefore, the educational experiences of these young women are tantamount to any attempt to retain girls on the fringes. This book gives insight into how the educational system and classroom experience fail to meet the needs of these marginalized young women, and offers curricular designs to address the educational needs of dropouts and potential dropouts. The effects of the non-school curriculum on these girls' academic experience are also explored.

Rezensionen
«Cynthia Cole Robinson sheds light on a neglected dimension of what I like to call the outside curriculum of student lives; namely, young women whose life contexts push them out of schools, onto the streets, and into a life of prostitution. Through in-depth interviews and empathic insight, Robinson enables us to learn from the stories of three such women and consider possibilities for helping others in similar circumstances through education. This is a groundbreaking book that offers a basis for deep reflection and concerted action for greater social justice.» (William H. Schubert, Professor of Education, University Scholar, Chair of Curriculum and Instruction, University of Illinois at Chicago; Recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Curriculum Studies of the American Educational Research Association)
«'From the Classroom to the Corner' maps the landscape of school failure from a particularly poignant perspective: the actual lived lives - both vivid and fragile - of the victims of an educational policy built on racial hierarchy, and class and gender divisions. The searing stories of Carmella, Celina, and Buddha will haunt your consciousness, urging you to rethink whatever settled and received notions you might harbor about the work of schools, reminding you that we are each others' responsibility and bond. Cynthia Cole Robinson is a fine thinker and a gifted portraitist, leading us steadily toward the heart of the matter...This book is essential reading for teachers and administrators, legislators and policy makers, parents and citizens.» (William Ayers, Distinguished Professor of Education, Senior University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Author, 'Teaching Toward Freedom: Moral Commitment and Ethical Action in the Classroom')
«Through poignant stories and rich theoretical analysis, Cynthia Cole Robinson explores the worlds of young Black women in ways that have been sorely lacking. A wonderful book for educational practitioners and researchers.» (Annette Henry, Professor of Education, University of Washington, Tacoma; Author, 'Taking Back Control: African Canadian Women Teachers' Lives and Practice')
«Combining theoretical clarity and a grittiness uncommon in socio-educational inquiry, this work captures the town vs. gown experiences of a rapidly increasing number of people living at the margins of danger and desperation in our society.» (William H. Watkins, Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago; Editor, 'Black Protest Thought and Education')
