Author, Dawn Blake Souza, was born and grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts. "From the Islands They Came" is the story of her mother's Cape Verdean family, its history and culture. Dawn is a retired public school educator and active member of her community. She earned a B.S. in Ethnic Studies from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and an Ed.M. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
