The 15 biographical studies contained in this volume examine the protagonists of a nationalist Protestantism that encompassed and transformed major subsections of the Protestant milieu. The portrayed theological visionaries, including university professors, religious activists and pastors, called themselves German Christians". Further studies deal with fanatical Nazi party members who, in their capacities as church leaders, attempted to put National Socialist ideologies into practice. Academic exploration into the breadth and scope of this nationalist Protestantism makes an important contribution to answering the question as to why National Socialism was met with such widespread approval by large strata of the German population."
