Atsuko is happy on the small farm she has always dreamed of. Her business is going well and she will soon need to hire help. When her husband agreed to leave the city to share with her family this life in the countryside that is not his, she knew how to recognize the sacrifices it cost her. But a friend who resurfaces from the past also confronts her with other options: Atsuko will have to sort out her existence and her desires, as tangled as an abandoned bamboo forest. All of Aki Shimazaki's novels can be read individually or disordered within a pentalogy, and form a singular work.
