Die 14 Biosphärenreservate in Deutschland gehören zu einem Weltnetz von 440 Gebieten des UNESCO-Programms "Der Mensch und die Biosphäre" (MAB). In den 70er Jahren zur Erforschung der Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehung gegründet, werden Biosphärenreservate seit der Rio-Konferenz 1992 zu Modellregionen für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung ausgebaut. Die vorliegende Publikation gibt einen Überblick über die bisherige Entwicklung und die Neuausrichtung des MAB-Programms in Deutschland. Die allgemein gültigen Leitlinien für Schutz, Pflege und Entwicklung dieser Gebiete werden erläutert. Vielfältige Projekt-Beispiele aus Praxis und Wissenschaft zeigen die lebendige Umsetzung des Programms in den deutschen UNESCO-Biosphärenreservaten.
