The book explores the impact of functional literacy on nutrition for illiterates. It establishes that nutrition for the illiterates is poor because of lack of knowledge and skills in basic nutrition. Poverty also contributed significantly to their poor nutrition. Apparently, both literacy and nutrition programmes faiL to redress the plight of the illiterates. This is because these programmes work in isolation as such functional literacy was not integrated in nutrition programmes where the illiterate adults participated. Because the majority of the illiterates are poor, they need programmes that contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods especially where basic needs were concerned. Therefore instead of participating fully in these programmes, the illiterate adults opt to venture into activities that they thought can help them put food on the table .
