This authoritative work, now in its fourth edition, presents state of the art knowledge on all key aspects of cancer prevention. In addition to detailed summaries on preventive strategies for specific cancers, readers will find current knowledge on a range of relevant scientific topics including the benefits of cancer prevention, the importance of diet and physical activity, innate and adaptive immune responses to cancer, hereditary risks, cancer health disparities, and the preventive role of telemedicine. In this new edition of the book, the coverage has been expanded to include additional disease sites and to provide up-to-date information across the range of disciplines in the field of cancer prevention and control. Written as a collaborative work by internationally recognized leaders in the field, Fundamentals of Cancer Prevention is an essential reference guide and tool for oncologists, primary care physicians, the research community, and students with an interest in reducing the burden of cancer through the implementation of effective preventive strategies.
Professor Alberts is Director Emeritus of the University of Arizona Cancer Center, in Tucson, AZ and Co-Chair of the Cancer Prevention and Control Committee at NRG Oncology, the largest National-Cancer-Institute-funded clinical trials research group. He has been at the forefront of cancer prevention and supportive care research for more than four decades and has authored over 700 scientific articles in cancer journals and books. The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) honored him with their 8th Annual Joseph H Burchenal Award for Clinical Research, their 3rd Annual Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention Research and their 2nd Annual Award for being a Pioneer in Cancer Prevention, in 2003, 2004, and 2014, respectively. Dr. Lisa M Hess began her research career in the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the University of Arizona Cancer Center in the early 1990s. Building on her initial training in pharmaceutical economics, health outcomes and policy, she applies a multi-disciplinary and inter-professional public health approach to the improvement of quality of life and health outcomes of individuals affected by cancer as well as of those at increased risk. She is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at Indiana University Schools of Public Health and Medicine and is also Research Advisor on Global Patient Outcomes at Eli Lilly and Company. Her research focuses on providing meaningful answers to challenging questions that can translate to individually and clinically relevant applications. She has co-edited Fundamentals of Cancer Prevention and Control with Dr. Alberts since its first edition in 2005.
