With Nikita Khrushchev as Premier of the Soviet Union and Dwight Eisenhower as President of the United States in 1958, the Cold War was frozen solid as these two outstanding warriors of World War Two confronted each other. Speaking of freezing, when Richard Edgar Zwez joined the Army, he had no idea that as a medic he would end up stationed at Ladd Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska. If the Soviet Union would have decided to invade North America with Richard Edgar Zwez being way, way up north, no doubt about it, he would have been right away in the front line of the conflict. With the Army and the Air Force well prepared, our defenders would have met the invasion head on with devastating weapons. But as they got ready for any confrontation, the medics took care of our troopers and our service personnel enjoyed serving our country while having fun. They were integrated into an America richly enjoying its many cultural talents in a generally satisfying, pleasant, wholesome peace so very enjoyable that everyone hoped it would never end.
