Diapirs of Tertiary salt are forming topographic highs in the Great Kavir basin and in several of its subbasins such as Qom, and Garmsar (Central Iran). Tertiary salt dissolved from these topographic highs collects as brines in downslope topographic lows where it is often reprecipitated as modern salt. The Garmsar basin is one of a series of basins in the foredeep of the Alborz Mountains forming an embayment in the northern periphery of the Great Kavir from which it is separated by the Kuh-e-Gachab and Dulasian swell.
