This is a case study of Hillcrest, an urban gay community in San Diego, California. It examines the ways that gay/lesbian and straight people in a gay neighborhood interact with and relate to each other. The study provides a historical context for these relationships, showing why Hillcrest became a welcoming place for not only gays and lesbians, but also for many heterosexuals. The story that emerges is one where heterosexuals played a significant role in creating a gay community, and where gay people were perceived as positive, middle-class contributors to neighborhood revitalization.
