Experienc the lives of two orphan children that are thrust together and do their best to survive and build a life. This is during the Missouri-Kansas Conflict in 1854 and the horror and chaos of the border conflicts during and before the civil war Then visit a small ranch in Northern California about 1935. Maybe this story isn't about the civil war at all. Maybe it's how their lives and times helped shape a boy not even born in the same century.

Autorenporträt
DENNIS HILL worked on the mountain in Sun Valley, Idaho, packed mules and was a big game guide in Montana. He wrote his first book, I Never Got to Meet Joe Back based on his time as a guide. Hill grew up in Nevada, rode bucking horses (poorly), spent some time wandering around Europe and even helped build atomic bombs at the test site outside of Las Vegas. After finishing his first book, he wrote Out in the Sagebrush, "A good cowboy yarn". Gem: An American Story, was the result of research of the conflict between Missouri and Kansas and his desire to continue storytelling, something he enjoys doing from his home in Reno, Nevada with his wife, Margaret, on a little place with horses, cows and border collies.
