Anna Shapiro offers45 years of experience asa psychologist and a psychotherapistand has been a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist for the last 35. Born in Moscow, Russia, in 1941, when soviet persecution and war constituted aharsh daily reality.In the late 1960's, while still in Russia, Anna met a yoga teacher who guided her in yoga philosophy, meditation practice, and in establishing her spiritual path. In 1979 Anna's family applied for and were denied permission to leave Russia, as crossing its borders was prohibited without government approval. Anna and her husband were forced to leave their jobs and were deniedwork elsewhere, while livingunder the daily surveillance of the KGB.Thus, began the family's ten-year painful wait for authorization to leave Russia. During this period, the family's life was a mixture of uncertainty, fear, and financial struggle,upheld,however, by the will and determination to overcome all difficulties.In 1975 Anna Shapiro began to teach yoga at home and in secret, despite the danger of imprisonment. In 1988, they received authorization to leave Russia, and arrived in the Boston area. While in the US, Anna became a certified Yoga and Ayurveda practitionerand worked as a psychotherapist for the Jewish Family and Children's Services in Boston, MA until her retirement in 2004. She has been teaching Yoga to people over 50 and continues to provide individual and group yoga therapy.As a Yoga instructor,Anna combines her extensive experience as a psychologist and as a yoga teacher, giving her a unique profile and abilities to reach her students on a deeper level.She has lectured on numerous occasions on such topics as "Yoga and Stress Management," "Yoga and Pain Control," and "Yoga and Self-Healing."
