He attended Caterham School, the University College of South Wales, and Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied contemporary history. He joined the Inner Temple before becoming a member of the Daily Chronicle's literary staff from 1901 to 1903. After completing a research scholarship at the University of Berlin, he worked as a lead writer for the Manchester Guardian from 1904 to 1905. He married actress Margaret Halstan on July 4, 1905.
