Geoparks in Iran are a new and up-to-date instrument in geotope and landscape conservation. The overall aim, to protect prominent geotopes, is often linked with nature conservation areas and national parks. The connection between natural and cultural heritage (e.g. mining, traditional land use management, irrigation system etc.) is of particular importance. Terrestrial and marine Geoparks are important instruments for domestic tourism in Iran, which is the first country in the MENA-region to develop a comprehensive Geopark system. Within this system there is an enormous potential for growth.
