He was the son of a painter and decorator from Clifton Street in west Belfast. Of his seven brothers, four, Albert (1863-1927), Jack (1872-1926), Edwin (1877-1952) and Norman (1879-1917), were also illustrators and cartoonists. Educated at the Model School and the Government School of Art, he was apprenticed as a signwriter. In the mid to late 1890s he lived in Chelsea, London, where he made the acquaintance of Mark Twain. In 1896 he contributed illustrations to Pick-Me-Up and Mary Russell Mitford's County Stories.
