This work traces the lives and careers of German authors Alfred Andersch and Hans Werner Richter, founders of the influential West German literary circle Group 47. Numerous aspects of their experiences, including captivity as POWs in the United States during World War II, participation in the American reeducation program, and subsequent struggles in occupied Germany, are discussed at length in the context of broader German experiences of Nazism, World War II, and their aftermath.
