Next to the U-boats, the surface raiders of the Kriegsmarine were among the most effective naval vessels the Germans loosed upon the oceans during World War II. Few, however, know that some of these "auxiliary cruisers" also served in the Pacific Ocean, even laying mines outside of New Zealand harbors.
