Johann Nepomuk Nestroy, 7. 12. 1801 Wien - 25. 5. 1862 Graz. Der Sohn eines Hof- und Gerichtsadvokaten studierte nach seiner Gymnasialzeit (1811-16) ab 1817 in Wien Philosophie, anschließend 1820-21 zwei Semester Jura, wurde jedoch dann - nachdem er bereits auf Liebhaberbühnen aufgetreten war - Sänger und Schauspieler. Nach seinem Debut als Sarastro in der 'Zauberflöte' erhielt er ein Engagement als Bassist am Deutschen Theater in Amsterdam (1823-25), 1825-31 spielte er in Brünn, Graz und Preßburg, seit 1831 in Wien: bis 1839 am Theater an der Wien, dann am Leopoldstädter Theater (1848 umbenannt in Carl-Theater), das er 1854 pachtete und als Direktor leitete. 1860 trat er zurück und zog nach Graz.
Hier war er 1827 zum ersten Mal als Dichter einer Lokalposse hervorgetreten ('Der Zettelträger Papp'). Seit seinem Engagement in Wien übernahm er immer mehr Sprechrollen, die er für sich selbst schrieb. Er verfasste über 80 Stücke, die auf den verschiedensten Quellen beruhen (Komödie

n, insbesondere Vaudevilles, Romane, Novellen), aber durch den Witz ihrer Dialoge, durch das virtuose Spiel mit der Sprache und durch die philosophierenden, kommentierenden Couplets die Vorlagen vergessen machen, wenn sie nicht ausdrücklich wie 'Tannhäuser' (UA 1857), 'Lohengrin' (UA 1859) oder 'Judith und Holofernes' (UA 1849) als Parodien konzipiert sind. Seinen ersten großen Erfolg hatte N. mit der Zauberposse mit Gesang 'Der böse Geist Lumpacivagabundus' (UA 1833).
