Kuno Fischer (1824-1907), einer der bedeutendsten Philosophiehistoriker des 19. Jahrhunderts, hat mit seiner Gesamtdarstellung zu Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) die Philosophie dieses größten Universalgenies der frühen Neuzeit für einen großen Leserkreis erstmals im Zusammenhang erschlossen. Seine Darstellung, die auf Grund umfassender Studien entstanden ist und noch immer gültige Einsichten zu Werk und Leben des Denkers vorträgt, stellt Leibniz ganz bewusst in den Gesamtzusammenhang der neueren Philosophie- und Geistesgeschichte. Sein Werk wird hier mit einem einführenden Vorwort sowie einer Biographie, die den neueren Forschungsstand wiedergibt, erneut vorgelegt.
