Gildenhammer: The Beating of her Heart is the companion novel to W. James Chan's first book, Blackcloak: A Man of his Sword. Spanning almost three decades, it traces the fate of Charan "Blackcloak" Jaydemyr's older sister, Sariana, as she struggles to figure out what happened to her Noble family, forgotten by everyone...everyone but her. Voluntarily or otherwise, she assumes various roles across the world first introduced in Blackcloak, Kaef're. First she is Sarah-Jade Falkenstrom, the daughter of a famous singer in Teristra, a Euro-centric city about to tear itself apart. Next she becomes Tzara-Min, a priestess-in-training spirited away to a sinister Liquid Night abbey run by Mother Chantal. And as Sister Talon Gukh-Fah she treks to the city of Kaifeng to deal with the aftermath of her brother and his twisted guide: Vachaelle Nightsong, also known as Fa Shai-Yeh...and Chantal Falkenstrom. Blackcloak was a distorted, egocentric mirror. Gildenhammer is the unrelenting reality unable to look away from it. Gildenhammer is at once Blackcloak's sequel, a prequel, and its very unhappy answer.
