Born on the South African veldt to a San Francisco socialite and a dashing Afrikaner, Julia "Girl" Dreyer Brigden has lived many lives. Crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Elizabeth and traversing the United States in a 1953 Lincoln Continental, the family washes up on the shores of the Pacific as the cultural revolution is about to begin. Leaving home at 16 to hitchhike unaccompanied to Mexico and landing in Ajijic, Julia settles in with a cast of bohemian characters for the first of what will become many adventures... From the Golden Gate Park Human Be-In to gem trading in Jaipur, India, from flying high with the Jefferson Airplane to crashing and burning on the streets of San Francisco, Julia's story is a roller-coaster ride through the ups and downs of living an "untethered" life.
Autorenporträt
I grew up in the baby boomer era in the heart of the San Francisco's counter culture scene. Having had a front row seat to the changing mores from the staid world of the Eisenhower ethos to the waning years of Bohemia I dove head first into the nascent origins of the hippy generation. Marrying into one of the seminal bands of the San Francisco Sound, Quicksilver Messenger Service, I watched the emergence of rock n roll as a major player and mouthpiece in the cultural divide that was sweeping the country. My husband went on to play in Jefferson Airplane and later Jefferson Starship. Having come from South Africa, raised by an Afrikaner father and an American mother I was subjected to the clash of cultures between old school white African values and my mother's privileged society world. Recognizing at an early age the inequities that females endured I struggled to come to terms and find my way through this dilemma. I broke free at a young age. Running off to Mexico as a teen, marrying at 17, with a child at 18, and continuing to run around the world unfettered by marriage or parenthood, I have lived out most of my childhood fantasies of travel and adventure. Inevitably, there was a price to pay for running free . I descended into a dark realm floundering in an effort to find my way.
