Glaciers located in Gilgit-Baltistan are the main source of fresh water supply to the whole of Pakistan. These glaciers are melting rapidly due to various environmental issues such as global warming and climate change. As a result most of the glaciers are retreating at a rate of 4 meter per year resulting in formation of new glacial lakes also. If this process will remain continue at the same rate then the whole Pakistan will face not only the shortage of water but the number and size of the glacial lakes will also increase. Thus the hazards associated to sudden outburst of these lakes to the communities living in the downstream will also increase. So I would like to request to the national and international environmentalists to contribute their share to give public awareness about global warming, climate change and effects of these factors on our Glaciers.
