James Baker spent the years of his summer married to his profession: a professor of history. He wrote books on Thomas Merton, Eric Hoffer, Andrew Carnegie, Eleanor Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Nat Turner, Studs Terkel, Ayn Rand, Brooks Hays, and Jimmy Carter. He even found time to write a book on religion, Faith for a Dark Saturday, and a religious play about Thomas Merton, Under the Sign of the Waterbearer. Those days having ended, he has spent the years of his autumn with his first love: fiction. He has published the novels Peter Peacock Passes, Sex and Bondage in Three Colors, Dogs to Men, Quest, White Dogs, Holidays with Sundae, and ghost wrote for Thomas Wood Mission to Seoul. These in addition to his series of mysteries featuring the monk and sleuth Father Columba: Prior Knowledge, Good for the Soul, The Third Monk, The Pope and I, and Boys and Girls Together. He now lives in a hermitage at the edge of a conifer forest. One of his neighbors raises gamecocks, another has two lions, and both have vicious Dobermans. Despite the danger around him, he expects, as Thomas Merton once wrote of himself, to have a quiet death in the woods, surrounded by concerned chipmunks. Throughout his life he has jotted down impressions of the places where he has lived and worked: the American South, where he often rode Trailways buses; knocking around various countries in Europe, usually lost and hungry; and teaching in South Korea and Taiwan. These jottings are the inspiration for the short stories in this book: fantastic stories he has heard from others, memories of his hometown, experiences he has had around the world, and a few additional stories about his cat Sundae, "the most beautiful, affectionate, and faithful female" ever to come into his life. They are funny, sad, tragic, but all fine-honed fiction by a master storyteller. Enjoy!
