This volume focuses on the emerging consequences of global aging for families and for the well-being of elders in those families. Contributors examine the changing life course, and trace an astonishing change over recent decades in the expected, traditional life course of individuals, especially in industrialized societies. They also examine worldwide changes in families and family structures that have occurred over the last fifty years: some due to a changing life course; others, to the consequence of remarkable changes in the average family structure; still others to the result of changes in values and political expectations regarding the role of the state in individuals' lives.
