The aim of this work is to explore the legitimacy of a path of meditation within religions centred on the path of love of God. The principal question considered is, is there an authentic path of meditation for the faithful Christian? Indeed, was there a path of meditation for the faithful Christian? And even, has there always been one? It is not, is meditation a legitimate support for the loyal pilgrim on the path to God? It is, is meditation a path to God? And even, is meditation the path to God? Islam is also considered, and for context, the work draws from meditative traditions including Yoga, Theravada Buddhism, and Zen. Though not an exhaustive list, the following mystics and masters are mentioned to varying degrees throughout this work: Saint Augustine, Meister Eckhart, the desert Christian mystics, Saint Hesychios the Priest, Saint Gregory Palamas, Francisco de Osuna, John of Ruysbroeck, Saint John Climacus, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Abu al-Qasim Al-Qushayri, Shaikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, Mulla Muhsin Fayd Kashani, Sheikh Muhyi al-Din Ibn al-Arabi, Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, Abu Said al-Kharraz, Kabir, Hakim Sanai, Hazrat Sultan Bahu, Ramana Maharshi, Patanjali, Ajahn Chah, Ajahn Mun, Hui-Neng, Eihei Dogen, and Osho.
