From a macro-historical perspective that employs Bourdieu's theoretical postulates of habitus and capitals, as well as the principles of Foucault and Van Dijk's discursive analysis; the present work intends to question the axiomatic principles with which the discourse of modernity, human rights, development and democracy is constructed in the 21st century, addressing reality as if it were a game of chess at the hands of great kings in expansion of their empires ultimately commanded not by humans, but by Gods.Taking as a starting point the political, economic and social evolution of Ecuador in recent decades (1990-2020) in the framework of development projects, we analyze the power dynamics, mechanisms of domination and hierarchical structures of Ecuadorian society, which have determined its internal development, as well as its interaction and place within the globalized world of the twenty-first century that faces threats as substantial as the ecological crisis and a potential nuclear war between world powers.
