Opal Smitherman was born in North Carolina in 1920. The American landscape was in upheaval for most of her young life, The stock market crash in 1929, followed by the Great Depression, followed by World War II - it was a tumultuous and tragic time in history. Even more tragic were the personal losses Opal suffered through no fault of her own.
