Before the arrival of the Europeans, the local people of Adanse were engaged in the mining of reefs in addition to panning gold from streams. Two Fante merchants from Cape Coast, Joseph E. Ellis and Joseph E. Biney began the modern story of the Ashanti Goldfields Company (now Anglogold-Ashanti) when in March 1890, they laid claim to a concession in the Adanse and Bekwai traditional areas. As a result, scientific mining had a profound socio-politico-economic impact on the people of Adanse. This book in a historical narrative fashion, recounts the impact of the centuries of gold mining activity on the people of Adanse in particular and Ghana in general.
